Water, Water, Everywhere...So you’ve finally got that dream house near the water. With the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Fear River and Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) just minutes away, there’s plenty for water lovers to experience.
St. James residents have been enjoying their proximity to the water for years. In the late 1990s, a fun-loving group waged an annual summertime flotilla war to claim the right to free passage on the water. Launching their decked out fleets of canoes, kayaks and a few small motorboats, they headed down Beaver Creek to the ICW and into open waters.
For those who want another type of boating experience, the marina at St. James was started in 1999 with wet slips only. The first dry stack building was opened in 2001 and the marina now has a capacity of more than 450 wet slip and dry stacks.
If you’re hoping to put a line instead of a boat in the water, there’s the St. James Fishing Club and the nearby Cape Fear Flyfishers Club, of which 70 percent of its members are St. James residents.
