Is St. James a gated community?
Yes. We have a 24-hour a day, 7-day a week manned entrance complemented by roaming security patrol. Additionally, Southport has one of the lowest crime rates in North and South Carolina.

What types of medical facilities are in the area?
There are multiple hospitals nearby. New Hanover Regional Medical Center, a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is located in nearby Wilmington. Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport is just five minutes from our gates. In addition, the town of St. James has a fully equipped fire department that includes an emergency medial response vehicle and aerial tower fire truck.

Are the golf courses open to the public?
To keep the courses in top condition and to keep the dues competitively priced, we allow a small amount of tee times to be made for outside play. However, the overwhelming majority of play is by members.

What is the climate like in Southport?
Southport has one of the best overall climates in the Carolinas, according to Retirement Places Rated Almanac. The weather is mild with a few extremes. Summertime highs are in the low 90s with a gentle southwestern breeze. Winters are in the low 40s, occasionally dipping to the 30s at night.

What is the typical price range for property in St. James?
Custom homes range from $395,000 to over $1 million. Homesites start at $175,000.

What is the tax rate for SJP?
It has stayed about $.355/$100 of value for the past few years. A home valued at $400,000 would have taxes of $1,420.00 annually. According to Kiplinger, NC’s state tax burden (income, property and sales taxes) compared favorably with state tax burdens across the country and well below taxes of the northeastern and Midwestern states.

What is there to do in the area?
Southport has been described as a Norman Rockwell fishing village with a variety of art galleries, museums, shops, restaurants, a yacht club, sport fishing and a host of civic and volunteer organizations. Nearby, Wilmington and Myrtle Beach also offer exciting options for culture, nightlife and hobbies. St. James Plantation owners can belong to more than 25 clubs and groups involved in activities as diverse as environmental stewardship to woodcarving to yoga. Are there age restrictions in the community?
No. We welcome all ages which helps to give the neighborhood a nice mix.

Whatever your fitness interest, we have it! To keep you physically fit, we have two state-of-the-art fitness centers complete with an indoor pool, two outdoor pools, daily exercise classes in Tai Chi, Pilates, water aerobics, body sculpting and yoga, a network of walking and biking trails, clay and hard-surfaced tennis courts and four championship golf courses. Spiritually, we have an interdenominational chapel. And for mental pursuits, we have clubs for chess, bridge, mah jongg, reading and investments.

Our owners come from 40 states and a dozen countries and they’re drawn to the ocean and the appeal of a hometown like Southport. Who are the developers? Are they a big out-of-town outfit?
The developers of St. James Plantation are native North Carolinians. St. James Plantation has been a very personal vocation for the developers, Homer Wright, Claude Smith and John Atkinson, and their families. In recent years, ownership and operation of St. James has been passed down to the next generation.

Loved by boaters and non-boaters alike, the beautiful St. James Marina is a protected, full-service, deep-water access marina on the Intracoastal Waterway with 155 wet slips and floating docks and 320 dry slips. The depth is eight (8) feet deep at low tide and is located at mile marker 315 on the Intracoastal Waterway. The popular ShipStore and Chandlery offers all your essentials – from snacks, bread and ice, to wine and beer...even tackle and bait! Charter services are also available for a half and full day of sport fishing.
